Shawn is a PhD researcher in human geography at the University of Edinburgh. His dissertation explores the everyday politics and moral geographies of alternative cultural and community spaces in Budapest through ethnographic fieldwork, video analysis and participatory action-research. The goal of the research project is to better understand the processes of practical decision-making involved in planning and sustaining spaces of dissent, while at the same time using the research process to support these communities in their work. Additionally, by studying how these spaces fit into and operate within community networks, this project seeks to engage a wider theme regarding the methods and capacities of cultural and educational institutions—including universities—to contribute to the well-being of their neighbouring communities.
