Governing Roma Education: International initiatives and national idiosyncrasies

January 14, 2014

The 26th conference of the Comparative Education Society in Europe (CESE) with the theme of Governing Educational Spaces will be held in Freiburg, Germany between 10-13 June 2014 .

The conference is considered as the most important meeting for comparative and international education researchers in Europe and an excellent location to present innovative research and exchange knowledge.

International initiatives like the Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015 and the EU Framework for National Roma Integration Strategies up to 2020 have set up novel frames where education is perceived as end and means of Roma social upward mobility. Such frames in combination with the reform-pressure of supranational and international organizations have provoked national and local reactions and rejections to the question how teaching and learning of Roma students should be organized. International, national and local actors have different perceptions about how integration/inclusion should be achieved (or even prevented in favour of segregation) that result in highly contested governance regimes.

The CESE invites applicants to submit a proposal for a cross-thematic session that adds a new aspect to the scientific discourse on "Governing Roma Education". In order to better understand educational governance dedicated to Roma integration/inclusion, proposals are welcome that analyse, contextualize, criticize or evaluate international initiatives and national or local idiosyncrasies to Roma education.

Abstract proposals should be no more than 400 words in length and include a purpose or objectives; a perspective or theoretical framework; methods, techniques, or modes of inquiry; data sources, evidence framework; and results, conclusions, and/or implications.

Abstracts should be sent to: chris.brueggemann@gmail.com no later than 5 February 2014.
