Ageing Society in Europe and UK: Employment and Policy Challenges
This conference aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to discuss the consequences of ageing on employment, labour demand and supply, skills, working conditions, gender issues, and so forth. It is an opportunity for European scholars and national stakeholders to meet and debate key strategies for dealing with ageing. Leading researchers from the NEUJOBS project will present their understanding of present and future challenges to European labour markets, focusing specifically on the following themes:
- An introductory session will describe the main demographic characteristics of the ageing process in Europe and some expected future trends.
- The second session will be devoted to the issue of long-term care, including its consequences for the workforce. The session will address not only the growing demand for long-term care but also the changes in labour supply, skills, types of jobs, and protection.
- The third session will focus on the employment of the elderly. An increasing life expectancy and the expectation of slower economic growth in Europe have increased the difficulty of financing pensions and have gradually changed our understanding of work and retirement. In many countries, including the UK, older workers are being pushed to stay in the labour market as long as possible. Both topics are dominated by key gender issues
The day will conclude with a round table on policy solutions to the challenges of an ageing society. The panel will draw on the ideas developed during the previous sessions to discuss how policies will need to adapt.
