This public roundtable will reflect on how engaged research may be practiced and what challenges it may encounter. The participants will reflect on research engagement - including engaged ethnographies - with a focus on migration, forced displacement and their broader social contexts.

Much research on migration and conflict resolution produce 'expertise' that excludes the subjects of research from knowledge-production. In what ways may we conduct academic inquiries that challenge these inequalities and hierarchies.

Some of the key questions to be addressed include:

  • What are the different meanings, practices and positionalities of 'engaged research'? What may be its limits? How may we conceive of the role and responsibility of engaged researchers today? How can we ensure that research practices do not reproduce the inequalities and exclusions they aim to analyse and denounce?
  • What particular knowledge may emerge from attentiveness to and participation in migrants’ struggles and that of other vulnerabilised groups? How do they challenge or destabilise other, perhaps more mainstream and dominant forms of knowledge? How could scholarship contribute to the circulation and intensification of the practices and knowledge of struggles?
  • How may and should scholars support solidarity initiatives for and by the people they research? How are migrants and those in solidarity with them facing the new wave of criminalisation and illegalisation they are targeted with?

The roundtable is part of the CEU Summer University Course 'Conceptualizing, Navigating and Representing the Field in Migration Studies'.
