CPS welcomed record number of summer university participants to CEU
In cooperation with the CEU Summer University, CPS and partners offered two courses in the summer of 2008.
The topics were "Climate Change" and "Integrity Reform". Both courses drew large number of qualified applicants from various stages in their careers. More than 90 participants took part in the courses, which is more than ever have attended summer university courses organized by CPS in a single year.
The course "Climate Change: An Interdisciplinary Inquiry" (link: teaching/summer univeristy/ 2008 climate change) was developed and directed by Thomas C. Heller of Stanford University, an internationally well-known expert on the rule of law, international climate control, global energy use, and the interaction of government and nongovernmental organizations in establishing legal structures in the developing world. The purpose of the course was to understand why the current impasse in the negotiations and implementation of climate change measures have occurred and to explore the various options proposed to escape from this situation. The faculty list included Bert Metz, Ferenc Toth and Diane Urge-Vorsatz. Participants came from 26 countries. CPS staff Dr. Violetta Zentai, Dr. Agnes Batory and Borbala Varga were closely involved in planning and implementing the course and related logistics.
The course “Integrity Reform: Strategies and Approaches” (link: teaching/ summer uni/2008 integrity) continues to attract an increasing number of applicants. Held for the fourth time in 2008, this course represents one of the few targeted, applied and yet conceptually grounded efforts currently available internationally for the analysis of corruption and corruption control, straddling law, economic, public administration, public sector ethics, as well as politics, statistical and ethnographic approaches. Following the format developed in 2007, the course was divided into plenary morning sessions and four afternoon policy labs led by experts in the field of integrity in reconstruction, fiscal transparency, governance of natural resources, and applied legal skills. The course was organized jointly with the NGO Tiri – Making Integrity Work. An impressive body of resource persons and participants represented more work in more than 40 countries and with experience of government officials, practioners and academics.
