In a new reality

CPS Research Fellow Andrew Cartwright delivers one of the keynote speeches of the 9th European Conference of the International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies in Florence.

"Increasing urban agriculture, involving people more actively in all sections of the food supply chain, using our unique position and knowledge to empower, create networks and advocate together with the people we work with" were just some of the ideas shared by CPS research fellow, Andrew Cartwright, who was one of the keynote speakers at the 9th European Conference of the International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies. Cartwright noted how a link between the support to migrants and increased food security can support the overall resilience of communities and countries. Migrant people who have skills, networks, legal rights and speak the local language of the country they live in tend to be more resilient and better able to cope when they are made redundant or find themselves in precarious work conditions. Professor Cartwright stressed how the Red Cross and Red Crescent can play a pivotal role in empowering people to deal with similar challenges, and encouraged us not only to think differently but also to talk differently about the crisis, analysing new trends and developments connected to it.
