The Center for Policy studies hosted a one-day training program on October 1st, focusing on Gender in EU-funded Research, delivered by Yellow Window, an Antwerp-based consulting firm.

Participation was free.

This one-day training session was intended for anybody interested in rendering research gender-sensitive: researchers, project managers, expert evaluators, etc. The sessions provided practical guidance on how the gender dimension could be integrated in research, using clear examples of how gender was relevant to existing projects within the European Commission's Seventh Framework Program (FP7)

Program

  • The morning was devoted to a general introduction to gender in research
  • In the afternoon, there were two parallel sessions in which two specific research fields were addressed with practical exercises (cases).

Scientific fields addressed: Socio-economic sciences and the Humanities

Science-in-Society (this field covers: the place of science and technology in society, ethical issues, the evolving role of universities, women in science, science education, and science communication)

Training objectives

The objectives of the training were consistent with the double approach in FP7 towards gender equality in research:

  • a more equal participation of men and women in research;
  • the integration of gender or sex aspects into research topics.

Method

The method combined cognitive (knowledge-based) and inductive (experience-based) elements. The programme was constructed as an interactive workshop, where all participants had the opportunity to contribute actively to the session, creating a stimulating learning process.
