GARNET Network of Excellence: Global Governance, Regionalisation and Regulation: The Role of the EU

GARNET was a Network of Excellence on Global Governance, Regionalisation and Regulation: The Role of the EU, funded under the European Commission’s 6th Framework Programme and comprising 42 leading research centres and universities. It was coordinated by the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation at the University of Warwick. GARNET was set up in 2005 with the aim to develop a multi-disciplinary network of scientific excellence of researchers, analysts and practitioners with expertise in key issues and themes in global and regional governance. The main thematic areas of GARNET were:

1. the theory and practice of regionalism;
2. the key institutions of the regulatory framework necessary for collective action problem solving at global and regional levels;
3. key policy issues in global governance; notably those concerned with overcoming problems in the governance of trade, finance, security, environment, technology, development, disease and public health, social reproduction and gender inequality;
4. the role of the EU in the advancement of research and policy practice on the above.

The Center contributed to four work packages (mobility, management, the EU and Eastern Europe, and Gender in International Political Economy). CPS also hosted a Garnet Fellow, Professor Diane Stone, in 2007.
