CEU CPS’s Krizsán receives inaugural Emma Goldman Award

Andrea Krizsan, Research Fellow at the Center for Policy Studies and adjunct faculty at the School of Public Policy, receives inaugural Emma Goldman award for her extraordinary expertise on, and engagement with, scholarship in the field of feminist and inequality issues. The Awards were awarded on February 13th at the Vienna Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) by Mieke Verloo, Chair of the FLAX Foundation.

The Emma Goldman Awards (EUR 50,000) are awarded annually to five to ten selected candidates for their outstanding achievements and contributions to research on feminism and inequality. By giving researchers sufficient space and time for their work, and helping them present it to the public, the FLAX Foundation contributes to the promotion and advancement of the social sciences and humanities, especially in the areas of inequality and social justice.

Krizsan was praised for her impressive set of comparative studies on gender and intersectionality in East and Central Europe, which counter and challenge the ongoing unwillingness of Western European scholars to understand the Europe outside the small, but still hegemonic West. Her strong list of publications on gender-based violence, institutionalization of intersectionality, and more recently democratic backsliding was mentioned along with her drive to create opportunities for others and herself to open the field for new topics, methods, teaching or research projects, always bringing her in-depth expertise, enthusiasm, engagement and working power to everything she is involved in.

Along with Krizsan, the Emma Goldman Awards went to Akwugo Emejulu, Professor of Sociology at Warwick University, Amade M’charek, Professor of Anthropology of Science, University of Amsterdam, R. Lucas Platero, Juan de la Cierva Researcher at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona and director of publications for trans* studies at Bellaterra Publishing House, Marta Rawluszko, Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw and cofounder of the Feminist Fund in Poland and Rossella Ciccia, Lecturer in Social Policy, Queen’s University Belfast and Marie-Sklodowska-Curie-Fellow, Department of Political and Social Sciences, Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence.
