National governments can learn from the collaborative governance efforts that have been within European cross-border regional spaces for several decades. That is the key argument of Sara Svensson’s lecture at the CEU Summer University’s course ‘Collaborative Local Government for an Open Society’, which takes place on July 12, 2018.

In the lecture she connects findings from ten years of research into cross-border governance mechanisms with insights from TROPICO. She used examples from borders in Central Europe and in Scandinavia to show how local governments have cooperated with governments from two sides of the border and actors from private and civil sectors to (attempt to) solve various policy problems, but also outlined the obstacles that have hindered and continue to hinder further collaboration in many places.
